Welcome to horseback riding trails in South Africa ’s Cape Floral Kingdom. In company of horses- In balance with nature.
Based 150km from Cape Town, in the Overberg, Western Cape, African Horse Co offers multi – day (pony trekking) horse trails and hourly outrides. This region lies within the Cape Floral kingdom, now a World Heritage site.
Starting in Stanford, Hermanus, the trails move through national parks and nature reserves, over mountain and private farms and along kilometres unspoilt beach. An astounding array of fynbos flora await the rider with habitats ever changing. Along with this, comes a rich bird wild life and the Southern Right Whales, which give birth and mate within the safe waters of the Walker Bay between July and December.
Here nature is supreme. Human development is naturally limited and nature based tourism an obvious source of income. African Horse Co has associated itself with the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative (ABI) as well as working closely with landowners dedicated to conserving the integrity of the floral kingdom. Principles of balanced , intergrated development form the vision of this region.
Trails are routed through the varying terrains of beach, mountain and dune, to places of historical and cultural interest. The horses used are South African Crossbreeds(Arab and Boerperd blood.Surefooted, enduring and well adapted to the environment, they are the key to a special opportunity to ride through the wonderful, untouched nature of the region
Sleeping in cottages on private reserves and in the heritage farmhouses within the Aghulas National Park, opens the door to some of the treasures of the Overberg and gives one an insight into the land and its people. Food is prepared by the surrounding communities, with a strong local flavour and an opportunity to meet the local people over a meal and a glass of the local wines.
